Educational Neuroscience
Educational neuroscience is an emerging interdisciplinary field that explores how the brain processes and retains information, seeking to apply these insights to educational practices. By combining neuroscientific research with educational theories and principles, it aims to improve teaching and learning strategies, curriculum development, and educational interventions. Educational neuroscience studies various aspects such as memory, attention, motivation, and cognitive development, offering valuable insights into effective instructional techniques, brain-based interventions, and personalised learning approaches for optimal educational outcomes.
Neurodivergent learners, regardless of their intellectual ability, face greater learning challenges compared to neurotypical learners. The nature and severity of these challenges vary significantly, underscoring the importance of neurodivergent individuals developing a comprehensive understanding of their unique neurobiology. Within the context of Neurodiversity, it is crucial for these learners to identify and implement effective classroom note-taking, note-making, and revision strategies that cater to their specific brain functioning.
If you are a senior leader in education, I would really encourage you to arrange whole school training focused on Neurodiversity. Understanding the additional complexities that impact the learning experiences of Neurodivergent young people, extending beyond conventional literacy and numeracy challenges, will equip your teaching and support staff with the confidence and ability to provide the right environment in which these learners can experience success. This will not only enhance behaviour and academic attainment but most importantly, it will have a profound positive effect on the well-being and mental health of the Neurodivergent community in your school.
20% of the student population are Neurodivergent Learners (with or without diagnoses), the power of a neurodiversity-informed school is that they can be actively helping their students long before they realise their own brain differences.
If you are a Neurodivergent learner or you are looking after one, consider educating yourself on Neurodivergent learning either through our ND Bright Brain Courses or arranging a block of Coaching and Mentoring sessions.
